about

I take a class at a local gym. one day I was talking to my instructor Neda Soderqvist after class and she told me a heart-rending story of an accident that had occurred the previous week, involving the daughter of one of her students in our class.
Emily Shane 13 years old, was waiting for her dad to pick her up after visiting a friend, when a driver trying to commit suicide by driving into a light pole, hit her instead and killed her.
My teacher told us about the girl -- what a bright spark she had been and how she loved to dance and sing. Her motto for life being "dance, love, sing, live". And that the kids at Malibu High had started a pay it forward campaign in her memory.
I was so moved by the story that I wrote a song incorporating her motto and the idea of being kind and helping people.

lyrics

For Emily

Close your eyes and open your mind
If there’s a thought in your head
Let it be kind

Try to be good I’m not looking for sainthood
If there’s a chink in your Karma
Don’t let it harm anyone.

Life will be filled with highs and with lows
Learn how laugh ‘til the milk comes out of your nose
Just let it go

Chorus
‘Cause I want you to live, I want you to love
I want you to dance and sing and when you do anything
Do it with love and do it for me

Open your eyes, Take a good look around
Make friends with the ones with their eyes on the ground

Don’t be afraid, To lend a hand
So long as you don’t need a medal and a full marching band

If you believe that a smile changes everything
You know you can change the world one deed at a time
Just give it time

And I want you to live, I want you to love
I want you to dance and sing and when you do anything
Do it with love and do it for me

Jump in the fountain, Jump out of an aeroplane
Sing out of tune, wear pajamas during the day
What I mean is what I’m saying is
Open your mind, open your mind
Be kind
